The Sisters Brothers / A Preview

anyone can tell / the heavy horses

I gotta say this looks like it might be a bit of fun.

The Sisters Brothers

The Sisters Brothers (2018) is a comedy Western based on a Best Selling Book called The Sisters Brothers by Patrick deWitt.
It’s already gathering interest because of the book – and the Star Power of Joaquin Phoenix and Jake Gyllenhaal. But you can guess by the skull on the posters, that the humor may well be a bit dark in places. ?

The Book

GOODREADS says:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9850443-the-sisters-brothers
“With The Sisters Brothers, Patrick deWitt pays homage to the classic Western, transforming it into an unforgettable comic tour de force. Filled with a remarkable cast of characters – losers, cheaters, and ne’er-do-wells from all stripes of life – and told by a complex and compelling narrator, it is a violent, lustful odyssey through the underworld of the 1850’s frontier that beautifully captures the humor, melancholy, and grit of the Old West and two brothers bound by blood, violence, and love.”

Patrick deWitt was born on Vancouver Island in 1975. He is the author of Help Yourself Help Yourself (2007, Teenage Teardrops), Ablutions (Feb. 09, Houghton-Mifflin Harcourt/Granta), which was named a New York Times Editors’ Choice book, and The Sisters Brothers (May 2011, Ecco/House of Anansi). He lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife and son.

A Fair Hanging / Six New Westerns

Tom Dooley / David Summerford

A Fair Hanging.

Every year a fistful of new Westerns try to sneak past me. Some succeed. Some are so bad they outta gallop past me at high speed. Yet there’s others that don’t get a fair hanging. And to Western Fans – like me – I figure they’re worth a watch.

The problem is not that we aren’t in the Golden Age of Westerns anymore – there’s still plenty of talent and good tales to be told. And will be. It’s other things. Mainly Money. Even though Westerns are usually fairly inexpensive to make (as Movie go) they still need to bring in some decent loot. It’s business. Art – as I’ve said – is not at the top of the list. Also, most movies these days are pre-screened (likely to audiences that are not Western fans) And if they figure the movie is not going to make good money (even if a good Movie/Western) they won’t distribute it to the theatres. It will then likely go directly to Video/DVD – or some other place like Netflix (if we’re lucky). But in a lot of instances they can become almost invisible right away – hard to find – and hard to get – even if you do know about them. Whether they deserve such treatment or not (in some instances they do). But in other instances we might well be missing a decent Western that you could rightly enjoy. Because like you, I often don’t agree with the Critics – or the general masses.

Six New Westerns

Which brings to what I’ve been leading up to: Six new Westerns that I’ve discovered which are upcoming or relatively new – that you probably don’t know about. So I’m gonna preview each one individually in next few days.

Here they are:

Yep you’re reading it right:
Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Should be interesting.

This looks pretty good.

We’ll have to see …

Of the Horror Western genre.
Not my thing, but doesn’t appear to take itself too seriously.

Looks offbeat … might be good?

An Australian Western. Looks possible.

Alright ! We’re gonna check these out.

It was Rose’s notion to go to Tofino.
I didn’t tell her that’s a 50/50 proposition weatherwise.
Tofino has about the highest rainfall of any place in Canada.
If it decides to rain, it can pour- and there’s not much you can do.
BUT when it’s nice, it’s paradise.

We hit the jackpot.

About the most beautiful day I’ve ever experienced here.
Others felt the same way.

Sadly the quality of some of my images were greatly diminished
due to the fact I had my camera settings wrong.
Still I hope the feeling is there.

Out of touch …

We’ve been out on the Western most edge of Canada. Tofino, British Columbia. This rendered us almost completely in the dark. Our Samsung tablet and our phone were pretty well useless there. It felt pretty rustic to be out of touch like that. But also good – in a way. I think we get too attached and dependent upon these things sometimes. I’m addicted to my computer. (Yet I haven’t had a cell phone in years)
OK – we’ve been hiking and taking a ton of pictures … heading back in about 3 days …

Mystery Unresolved

OK I failed to resolve my brothers problem of why he can’t access site. I talked to WordPress Support – detailing the issue. They checked things and said that anybody should be able to find my site and make comments –
they are not blocking ??
Not sure what else I can do. I’ll keep my ear to the ground
and see if I can figure this thing out.

Onward

I’m going away for a week.
Sorry – won’t be able to work on the blog.

However:
Projects I’m working on:

Featuring that Prince of Fiends: Basil Rathbone!

Posters: Jesse James Films
Fun – but a lot of work finding and fixing
those old posters.

The Death of Jesse James
Depictions of his assassination in Film.
But most Jesse James don’t depict this at all!

I’ve really enjoyed working on this Jesse James thing. (Bet you couldn’t tell).
Not really finished yet either. He’s an incredible study of
Western Lore and Legend.
It seems his Iconic stature outweighs the evil that his did. ??

Well … you fool some of us humans,
but … the Big Guy is not so easy.

Stay tuned.

Another mystery ?

Howdy Folks,

I just got an email from brother Doug. He says he can’t access my site – or post a comment. I’ve never encountered this before and I wonder if anybody has any insight into why this might be? Is it something to do with WordPress? of what? I am not blocking anyone – to my knowledge?

He wanted to tell me about a post video on Belle Starr, the famous bandit who evidently had relations with both  Jesse James and Cole Younger – among others. I couldn’t play the video he sent be because it’s in a rather obscure format called M4a. However, I looked on YouTube and found this video on Belle. It might well be the one he was trying to send me?? It is pretty interesting and informative if you’re up to watching it – about 19 minutes long.

Meanwhile I gotta figure out why anyone can’t access my site?? Mystery to me.

Jesse James / The Long Riders / Stunting Revisited

jesse james / ry cooder

Stunts: Jesse James and Long Riders

Back on April 5, I made a post called Jesse James (1939): The Stunt of Infamy. It detailed an stunt in the movie whereby a horse was killed. This stunt led to the creation of the The American Humane Association (AHA) – an organization that monitors animal safety in film making
(among related concerns).

Ironically, 41 years after the this original incident, The Long Riders (1980), openly commits more animal safety infractions – while duplicating stunts from this original film?!

Here is the AHA review of The Long Riders:

AHA was not informed of the animal action prior to filming, but confirmed via screening the film on May 19, 1980 that two obvious horse trips occurred. In one fall, a horse landed on its back and in the other fall, the horse did a dangerous forward somersault. Since it was deemed that these falls could not be achieved without the use of tripping wires, AHA rated the film Unacceptable.”

Below is a clip from Jesse James (1939). Apart from the famous stunt I mentioned it shows no horse trips, but does show another questionable stunt: jumping horses through a window. Yes, we know that’s not real glass, but you have to wonder …

https://www.google.com/search?q=video+of+longriders+jumping+through+windows&rlz=1C1GCEA_enCA953CA953&oq=video+of+longriders+jumping+through+windows&aqs=chrome..69i57.17405j0j15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:2d30fc3b,vid:NsMwPIy4Ax4

Another stunt in The Long Riders  is an obvious horse trip.  Little wonder they wouldn’t want the AHA to monitor this.

                         WHO ??? ME ?!

Director Walter Hill was a Peckinpah fan. Not hard to tell.

AHA Movie database and Reviews:

However over 90 percent of Movies monitored
by the AHA pass the safety checks.
Most Movie Directors and Producers do care.

Here’s a few that didn’t pass:

Stagecoach (1939)
Horses are tripped with great abandon in this Classic.
Ben-Hur (1925)
In 1925, it’s a certainty that the safety of either beast
– or man – was of no concern.
Heaven’s Gate (1980)
The reputation of this film is damaged anew.
The Wild Bunch (1969)
In one scene Sam Peckinpah collapsed a whole bridge full of horses
and riders into a river.

I admire Pek’s work as a Director. He was really good.
And he always said that he didn’t ‘sugar coat’ his bloodshed
in his movies because it sanitized the true gore of killing –
which he hoped people would abhore.
Unfortunately people didn’t abhore it.
They embraced it.

Video Conversion – Geezer Style

Video Conversion – Geezer Style

I just spent many hours trying to get a video clip from The Long Riders. I was using VLC Video Player (a great little device) and I could easily get a good video clip – but with no sound. The original movie video was in a format called ts = ‘Transport stream’ and I could not figure out how to get the Audio. I fumbled and bumbled for many hours – first trying to convert the original clip to MP4 – or ANY format that might work. I looked at several YouTube videos (another useful asset), but nothing worked. (I bet any kid could have shown me how to do this in one minute). I’d been trying to figure this out this Video Clip thing for weeks because a video clip can really enhance a Post. It has to be a simple Video Editor or I’m lost.

FINALLY – FINALLY!!! I got one configuration to work.
Now I can’t remember how I did it.
Easy stuff for some people.
Not for me.

Reviews

Reviews were Good.
But that was in 1980.
Over time some Movies gain in appreciation.
May even become Classics.
But others decline.
Action Movies may become ‘Dated’
if the Action doesn’t measure up
to modern standards.

The Long Riders?
Quite a bit of Peckinpah inspired Action
and
bloodshed to be sure – and some impressive stunts.
And the movie has strong Star Power.

So … right now …
I’m going to give it a 7 out of 10.

Just curious … why do you need 9 guys to rob a bank?
Even the real James – Younger gang had 8 at Northfield?
I figure a single person can rob a bank?
Not that I’m an expert.

Outstanding in their field

The Long Riders has been made on faith and idealism.”

The Carradine brothers

The Keach brothers
as The James’ brothers

The Quaid brothers …
as The Miller brothers

The Guest brothers
as The Ford brothers

So who gets Top Bill?

Brothers Randy and Stacy Keach were Cast as Jesse and Frank James – and were also Executive Producers of the Movie.
And Co-Writers of the Movie.
And you’d expect Jesse and Frank James to be the main Characters in the movie. Right?
So the Keach boys should get Top Bill. Right?

Nope.

The Carradines were Top Billed on the Movie Posters
and on the Film Credits.

Were the Carradines bigger Stars at that time? Guess so?
Or was there some agreement?
Don’t know?

WIKIPEDIA: “In order to make the movie, David Carradine forfeited his customary profit participation; the Keach brothers gave up the extra profit percentages they were entitled to as executive producer in order that the Carradine brothers got the same amount of profits. When the film went over its original $7.5 million budget, the Keaches forfeited their executive producer fees. “The Long Riders has been made on faith and idealism,” said Keach.”

In the end, the movie Cost: $10,000,000 (estimated)
and
Made: $23,000,000, USA, June 1981.

Incredibly, that very same year, (1980) another Western by United ArtistsHeaven’s Gate, completely decimated the company.
It’s one of the most infamous stories in Filmdom where Director Michael Cimino was responsible for massive overruns in budget and time …
(But that’s another story)

Shenandoah / The Brothers Four

Wikipedia: “Oh Shenandoah” (also called simply “Shenandoah” or “Across the Wide Missouri“) is a traditional American folk song of uncertain origin, dating to the early 19th century. The song appears to have originated with Canadian and American voyageurs or fur traders traveling down the Missouri River in canoes, and has developed several different sets of lyrics. Some lyrics refer to the Oneida chief Shenandoah and a canoe-going trader who wants to marry his daughter.”

Not sure why, but as a kid I always related the song to the American Civil War – especially the South. It’s older that that though. It’s a beautiful song, but to me it’s also sad. Like a lament for unrequited Love. Yet inspiring. I first heard this song on Harry Belafonte’s  Classic live double album Belafonte at Carnegie Hall (1959). Harry was at his peak at that time and he does a superb job on it. Here The Brothers Four have a great interpretation.

Fitting.

“Having a great time in West Virginia. Home soon.”

A staged photo? Probably not. Lots of kids picked up a rifle. And knew how to use it.

An American Trilogy / written and sung by Mickey Newbury

An American Trilogy

Mickey Newbury recorded this song in 1971.

Singer / Songwriter Genius

It’s said that over 465 versions of “An American Trilogy” have been recorded by different artists.
The Three songs in Newbury’s Trilogy are:
1. Dixie: a blackface minstrel song that became the unofficial anthem of the Confederacy in the Civil War.
2. “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”, the marching song of the Union Army during the Civil War.
3. “All My Trials”, originally a Bahamian lullaby, but closely related to African American spirituals, and well-known through folk music revivalists. Also very widely interpreted.

Beautifully done by a Songwriter who is yet to achieve the appreciation he deserves. But I felt his song fit nicely here.

Little Dixie and the Long Riders

Long Rider – “A long-distance traveler on horseback, often an explorer or adventurer. Unlike an endurance racer, a long rider sets his or her own schedule and often travels alone.”
From Cowboy Bob’s Dictionary / http://www.lemen.com/dictionary-l.html

Little Dixie

Little Dixie is a historic 13 to 17 county region of mid-to-upper-mid Missouri along the Missouri River, settled at first primarily by migrants from the hemp and tobacco districts of Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee. Because Southerners settled there first, the pre-Civil War culture was similar to that of the Upper South. This area of Missouri was largely settled by people from the Upper South, especially Kentucky and Tennessee, and became known as Little Dixie for this reason.

When the Southerners migrated to Missouri, they brought their cultural, social, agricultural, architectural, political and economic practices, including slavery. On average Missouri’s slave population was only 10 percent, but in Little Dixie, county and township slave populations ranged from 20 to 50 percent by 1860. Naturally most of these folks supported the South – the Confederacy.

Much of the dramatic build-up to the Civil War centered on the violence that erupted on the Kansas–Missouri border between pro- and anti-slavery militias.

However, there were other events that shaped the James James and the James- Younger Gang:

In May 1863, while at his family’s farm, a teenage Jesse was ambushed and his stepfather hung from a tree (he survived) by Union militiamen seeking the whereabouts of Frank and his fellow insurgents. Frank James was already riding with a troop of Southern guerrilla marauders. This incident no doubt contributed to his hatred of the North/Union.

 Quantrill’s Raiders

“William Quantrill was born in Ohio on 31st July 1837. He had severe behavioral problems and as a teenager was convicted of murder. Released in 1855 he became a teacher at Fort Wayne, Indiana. (Really?)

Quantrill also tried his hand as a professional gambler, but this was not successful and he found work as a teacher in Lawrence, Indiana. However, accused of several crimes, he was forced to flee from the town in disgrace.

A strong supporter of slavery, Quantrill joined the Confederate Army on the outbreak of the American Civil War. He fought at Lexington, but disliked the regimentation of army life and decided to form a band of guerrilla fighters. As well as attacking Union troops the Quantrill Raiders also robbed mail coaches, murdered supporters of Abraham Lincoln and persecuted communities in Missouri and Kansas that Quantrill considered to be anti-Confederate. He also gained a reputation for murdering members of the Union Army that his guerrillas had taken prisoner.

In 1862 Quantrill and his men were formally declared to be outlaws. By 1863 Quantrill was the leader of over 450 men. This included Frank James, Jessie James, Cole Younger and James Younger. With this large force he committed one of the worst atrocities of the Civil War when he attacked the town of Lawrence. During the raid on 21st August, 1863, Quantrill’s gang killed 150 inhabitants and destroyed over 180 buildings. Quantrill found it difficult to keep his men under control and they tended to go off and commit their own crimes. By 1865 he had only 33 followers left. He was shot and died from his wounds on 6th June, 1865.”

The American Civil War ended about 1865. But the James and Youngers just kept on going. For about 17 years!! Jesse and his gangs robbed banks, trains, and stagecoaches in at least ten States: Missouri, Kentucky, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, and West Virginia.

Between robbery’s. Jesse and Frank relaxing.
