Dean Martin Westerns / Sergeants 3 /1962

Wikipedia says: “Sergeants 3 is a 1962 remake of Gunga Din (1939) set in the American West, directed by John Sturges and featuring Rat Pack icons Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop. It was the last film to all five members of the Rat Pack …”

The 4 Rat Pack movies were: Ocean’s Eleven (1960), Sergeants 3 (1962), 4 for Texas (1963), and Robin and the 7 Hoods (1964).

Tags / Sergeants 3

It was the fashion in the 60’s to often massively hype movies and often completely misrepresent their true flavor. Thus we see these Tags assigned to Sergeants 3 with make it look like some zany slapstick send up:

They’re the Wildest Characters in All the West!
You’ve gotta see it to know how wild the west can be!
They’re Gamblers… They’re Lovers… They’re The Wildest Characters In All The West! (British poster)
They take the West… Like it’s never been taken before!
are you READY?
MAN! This one’s THE WILDEST!
Even the Indians are funny in … SERGEANTS 3

Shameless exaggerations. Yes, Sergeants 3 had humor, but it also had some fairly serious undertones.

Most of the humor was rather on the clever side though – such as this clip of Dean playing poker with the Blacksmith:

What a great post on Dean Martins Westerns. I really like all the western pictures you put on this post.

    Thanks

Thanks. These projects always get bigger than I intended and I still have the Posters to put up.

I’ve never seen Sergeants 3. Obviously a Rat Pack picture. Is the plot any good? I can imagine Sammy twirling his guns. He was fast!

Sammy was awesome in anything he did. The most complete entertainer I’ve ever seen: Nightclub, Singer, Recording Artist, Actor (Drama, Comedy or Musical), Impressions, Dance … There was nothing he couldn’t do – brilliant in all. Yup, and he could twirl them guns too.
“The Plot”? … follows the Gunda Din storyline – Sammy being Gunda Din with a trumpet. Oh, did I forget to mention that Sammy could play a number of musical instruments as well?
The movie is entertaining enough simply because of the Pack. Otherwise it would be a pretty lousy Western.

Funny, if I were to think of actors who made a lot of Westerns, I might overlook Martin; but he made a LOT of Westerns and all of them very enjoyable.

He covered quite a cross section of quality and genre in Westerns. Even made a Spaghetti Western which I have not looked at yet. That’s going to be interesting.
