Hopeful enthusiasm … tinged with fear.
Mine.
“Reprising the main role of Chris made famous by Yul Brynner …”
“TOM CRUISE !!!”
Whoa !!! Tom gets some large appreciation.
No problem.
But his selection was already out of the bag.
Tom take a bow … waves … flashes his famous grin.
“Tom’s role by default”, I’m thinking.
He’s good though. Sometimes great.
But the inevitable comparisons with (Yul Brynner)
It’s tough.
“No matter” I mumble, “I think he’s up to it.”

You’re right though, some things can NEVER be reprised (like that famous audition scene).So many things have to come together and that whole movie and it’s cast was a special, inspired moment. There is no formula that can be conveniently bottled. First you have to find the Actors – then a Director – then the Writers … (Writers should likely come first) … and on.
Hollywood and the film industry love to find film formulas that they can regurgitate over and over again – for money. But when you do a direct Remake of something that was special, you run into special problems where you have to live up to the original Artwork. Most often – as we’ve seen – this is impossible.
