The 50’s is often referred as the ‘Golden Age of Westerns’ – as they were popular and plentiful at that time (may they return again).
And many Western Classics were made.
Glenn Ford made 10 Westerns during the 50’s – of varying quality
– some Classics – some forgotten.

Reasonable ratings … a passable way to spend a couple of hours.

Those were the best years. Westerns were to the 50s like “cartoon” movies are now. Who knows what the future holds?
It will fall upon independent film makers to make decent Westerns (or anything) – as the studios are cranking out remakes and comic book stuff. There’s really no reason we shouldn’t have more – and better – Westerns. We have a wealth of worthy material – books and such – not to mention history – to draw on. But the money brokers feel there’s no market. And even though Westerns are relatively inexpensive (as film making goes) it still takes a few bucks to make a movie. Fortunately we are seeing a TV Mini-series – or two – to hold us over. Giddyup !!!
