Damon, Costner & Freeman joining Cruise in Magnificent Seven!?
Damon / Freeman / Costner
If we can believe the somewhat unreliable British tabloids.
According to The Sun, Cruise has enlisted the fellow A-listers to join him on the recently announced western.
A source said: “MGM are throwing big money at the film and wanted some top names to fill the main parts.
“You can’t get much bigger than Cruise and Damon.”
Tom will play Yul Brynner’s role as Chris. Morgan Freeman may be villain Calvera, while Kevin Costner could play Britt.
If it’s true, then expect the film to have one of the biggest budgets of all time – – or, at the 11th hour, Mark Ruffalo and a couple of cheap imported actors come in to replace the out-of-price-range others.
MFW Administrator’s Comments:
On top of obvious Casting concerns, I also wonder about the crucial question of Directing – and Who that might be? Unknown as of yet – at least by me.
The rumored casting:
– Cruise as Chris? (Yul Brunner) Cruise is surely an established Star and a box office muscle man, but can he measure up to Yul? At least I don’t expect him shave his head.
– Freeman? This surprised me the most, but as the head ‘badguy’ he would probably do his usual great work – though he’s said more than once that he wants to retire (He’s 80+) Evidently people keep offering him work that he can’t refuse. (Recently saw him in a wonderful little pic: “The Magic of Bell Isle” – not a Western).
– Matt Damon?: He’s great in most things – but I was not overly impressed with his role in True Grit. Maybe he wants to make up for that.
– Costner: An interesting selection. His part would reprise James Coburn‘s role. Not a small task. Costners’s Star is still a bit in limbo, but with good writing and Direction I’d hope he can pull it off. For his sake.
